The arrest of two youths by the south division of the police on Friday has come as a revelation for the city police. The law-enforcers now feel that not all reported attacks on Northeasterners were concerted attempts, or provoked by the Bodoland riots. Some attacks, in fact, were carried out over petty issues. Once the police brass realised that some Northeasterners had indeed been attacked, they sought to trace the victims and have cases registered.

On Friday, there were reports of an NRI having been attacked by two youths in JP Nagar on Saturday last. Deputy commissioner of police (south) Sonia Narang ordered the JP Nagar police to registered a case against the two. The police then arrested Mohan, a school dropout, and Dinesh, a second year PUC student, who had attacked the NRI.

“We arrested two persons and booked cases against them. We are not going to spare anyone if they attack Northeasterners or anyone else in the city,” Narang asserted.

The police feel that the rumour of an impending attack on Northeasterners after the month of Ramzan is indeed one since, at least in this case, both perpetrators did not belong to a particular minority community. The two youths told the police that they were not aware of either rumours or the Assam riots. They attacked the NRI simply because dirty water got splashed on them while he was dribbling with a basketball on the road.

Narang felt that there might have been attacks on Northeasterners for different reasons, but all cases were being seen as being deliberate attempts.

In another case, an Assamese man received a threat over the phone. The police traced the number after he filed a complaint. It was found that the call had originated from a number registered in Assam. “The police are now investigating the incident, and also the probability of Northeasterners themselves making the calls and creating rumours,” sources said.
