The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Students’ Council, which took an active part in the campaign against corruption in the city, will hold cycle/walk day on the 5th of every month on the IISc’s 500 acre campus.

“Just as 4th of every month is observed as ‘Bus Day’ in Bangalore, the students’ council announces cycle/walk day on the IISc campus on 5th of every month,” members of the council said.

Flagging off the campaign, students will refrain from using motorised vehicles inside the campus on Monday. The council pointed out that the initiating the campaign on Teachers Day was a gratitude they could show to Mother Nature, a great teacher for all off humanity.

All members of the institute community are encouraged and requested to avoid using motor vehicles for going around the campus, the council added.

On the first ever walk/cycle day, the students will have a campus tour (by walk) at 5 pm to explore the greenery of the campus.

The symbolic walk around the campus, starting from Main Building to Jubilee Gardens and then, back to Hostels and Labs.

Members added that visitors to IISc who use motorised vehicles would be encouraged to park their vehicles near gate.

“We hope this concept will gradually have a greater impact and all the members of institute community will tend to leave their vehicles and take a walk to their departments, labs, office. Students’ Council is in discussion with other communities like staffs and faculties,” the members added.

The Centre for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transport and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) would mentor this program in a wider perspective.

CiSTUP has also developed a software to guide visitors to reach to respective departments on foot.
