Schoolchildren have a reason to rejoice. This year, the kids will not face any problem in getting text-books as the education department is all set to ensure their supply before the reopening of schools.

Learning lessons from last year’s fiasco when there was a massive disruption in the distribution of text-books, the education department has this year already printed 70% of the text-books and stocked them up in block education offices at the taluk-level.
“We will not allow the repeat of last year’s mess. We will distribute free text-books to Standard I to X students in all government and aided schools directly through the BEO offices. Unaided private schools have to submit demand drafts and take delivery of text-books. Last year, we printed books after unaided schools submitted the DDs. But this year we have already printed 70% of the text-books and by this month-end, all text-books would be printed,” primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri said.

“The state government is spending Rs80 crore for the printing of 325 text-book titles for 5.5 crore students. The text-books are of good quality and printing is also good. We will announce the date for private schools to submit the DDs and collect the books from the BEO offices,” he added.

About uniforms, the minister said that orders had been placed with the handloom and powerloom development corporations for supplying uniforms.

But the corporations were demanding higher rates and the matter was under the consideration of the finance department, he said. “A final decision will be taken in two days. I am hopeful that the uniforms will reach schools before they reopen,” he said.
