A naxalite got injured during an encounter with Anti Naxal Force (ANF) team on Wednesday, but managed to escaped into the the Subramanya forests in the Western Ghats.

The ANF jawans were carrying combing operations in the Cheru-Kalkunda sector, when the encounter happened. The security forces recovered a high powered double barrel rifle in Cheru village.

Inspector General of Police (ANF) Alok Kumar, who was leading the combing operations told DNA that the jawans had came across a group of 5-6 naxalites on Sunday and since then they have been combing the area. On Wednesday they exchanged fire with the naxalites in which one of them reportedly received bullet injuries, but managed to escape into the thick forest.

The IGP said this is the first time that Naxal groups have been spotted in this sector. Sometime back we had found a place in Cheru village where a naxalite group might have stayed overnight, but there was not enough evidence to conclude that they had camped there. We believe that the naxalite group we had encountered belonged to the Vikram Gowda group, he added.
