Jnanabarathi police have solved the mystery surrounding  the death of a lorry driver in Chitradurga on June 14, by arresting a  gang of four highway robbers.

The arrested have been identified as Mohammed Ajgar, 33, a resident of Begur, Mohammed Hussain alias Babu, 39, a resident of Eight Mile, Tumkur Road, Mohammed Altu alias Altaf, 30, a resident of Kengeri and Rehan Pasha, 39, a resident of Shira in Tumkur district.

They had attacked and killed Raju, a lorry driver from Tamil Nadu, while he was transporting bore-well casing pipes to Hubli in his lorry (registration number AP-02-X-2745). Near Hiriyur by-pass Raju had stopped his vehicle, as he was running low on fuel. He approached a nearby tea stall and asked the owner to lend him some money. He even offered the stall owner a spare tyre as security.

The four accused were also present at the stall and expressed willingness to lend money to Raju provided he gave them a lift to  Davangere. Raju agreed and offered to repay them at their destination.

Two of the accused, Azgar Pasha and Mohammed Altaf, got into the lorry, while the rest followed the vehicle in a car. When they reached Doddasiddanahalli village in Chitradurga rural area, the miscreants killed Raju by strangulating him and drove the lorry towards Shibhi Ghat. There they poured kerosene on the body and  set it on fire. They fled with the lorry and consignment.

A case of murder was registered at the Chitradurga police station and missing case was filed by Raju’s wife at Vellore police station in Tamil Nadu. Raju was transporting pipes from a place near Nepal border and was accompanied by another driver, who had got down in Dabaspete to go to his house. The assailants had a criminal history.

The case
Jnanabarathi police inspector Lakshminarayana Prasad had earlier arrested the four in connection with another robbery case and sent them to jail. Along with stolen items, the police had also seized the lorry. The accused had kept the murder under wraps. It came to light only when the police began the search for lorry owner to return the vehicle. They found that the lorry had been bought and sold many times. They approached each owner and finally managed to contact Raju’s wife at Vellore.

She came to Bangalore to identify the vehicle and apprised the police that her husband was missing and she had filed a case.

The police became suspicious and took the four culprits back to custody. During interrogation they confessed to the murder.
