Though the apex court verdict quashing the disqualification of 16 MLAs is seen as a slap on the face of chief minister BS Yeddyurappa and speaker KG Bopaiah, the former has claimed that it would only augment the BJP’s numbers, and not pose any threat.

“BJP’s strength in the state assembly has gone up to 121 (including the speaker and one independent, Varthur Prakash). The Supreme Court verdict will not affect the continuation of BJP government,” he said.

Welcoming the order, Yeddyurappa said, “We will obey the court order. The disqualified BJP MLAs have stated before the apex court that they did not leave the party and the court has endorsed the same. From that moment, they are with our party and they will continue as BJP MLAs,” Yeddyurappa said.

Refusing to comment on Supreme Court’s strictures against the speaker, the chief minister said Bopaiah will continue in his post for the remaining two years.

“People of the state are with us. The popularity of the government has been proved by the party’s victory in all the three constituencies in the recently-held by-elections. In a democratic set-up, people’s mandate is supreme. Developmental works taken by BJP government has yielded results,” said Yeddyurappa.

He said that a 10-day legislative session has been called from Monday to speed up implementation of development programmes and get clearance for 2011-12 full budget. “In the session, we are ready to face the opposition. We have the numbers and there is no need to worry,” the chief minister said.
