Sri Rama Sene leader Pramod Muthalik has been arrested on charges of inciting July-2 communal clashes in Mysore. Three people were fatally stabbed and scores of persons suffered injuries in the clashes.

“We have arrested him on charges of abetting the throwing of a pig carcass near a religious school which led to the clashes in which three people were killed,” Mysore Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal was quoted as saying by the agencies.

According to Mysore DCP VS D’Souza charges under Sections 295A, 173A, 109 and 120B of IPC have been slapped against the Sri Rama Sene leader. Muthalik was arrested in Belgaum late on Friday. “He has been brought to Mysore for interrogation,” Agarwal said. He was later remanded to judicial custody till August 7.

Muthalik has gone on a hunger strike in protest against the ruling BJP’s anti-Hindu stand. The Mysore police had made a breakthrough in their probe into the clashes after they arrested mason Krishna (30), who allegedly confessedthat he and his friend, Raju, had placed the carcass of an animal near a place of worship, sparking off the conflagration.

Krishna had also revealed that he had committed the act as he was inspired by a speech Muthalik had delivered in Mysore some time earlier. There were also reports that Muthalik had visited Kyathamaranahalli a few times in the weeks preceding the clashes in the area.
