If you have missed banking of umbilical cord blood stem cells during the birth of your little one, dental stem cell banking gives you a fresh opportunity.

Although the technology is relatively new, many Bangaloreans are showing keen interest.

Dr Lokesh Kenkere, consultant, prosthodontist, Kenkere Dental and Implant Centre, said, “Successful stem cell therapies for tissue repair, organ redevelopment, and bone restoration have made doctors take notice of its potential in the surgical domain.”

Research shows that mesenchymal stem cells from the dental pulp can differentiate into any cell type except the blood cell.

Stemade Biotech, as of now, is the only company in India to facilitate dental stem cell banking. It was launched in Mumbai and Delhi in November last, following launches in four cities — Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai by February.

“We have got good response. We have set up nearly 100 clinics for tooth collection across the country. While even adults can go for stem cell banking by removing their wisdom tooth or any other tooth that requires removal, it is the parents who missed the window of umbilical cord blood banking are showing interest in the dental stem cell banking,” said Shailesh Gadre, managing director, Stemade Biotech.

“Parents, who walk into my clinic, question about it. They are given a brochure that details about the dental stem cell banking,” said Dr Kenkere. “Sometimes, even older people show interest in dental stem cell banking, but I have to turn them down. A good amount of stem cells can be extracted either from milk tooth of children aged between seven and 10 or wisdom tooth of grown-ups between 16 and 30 years of age,” he added.

The doctor has already collected around seven milk teeth for stem cell banking over the last five months.

The company already has over 300 processing units in India. “However, awareness about dental stem cell banking is still low and orthodontics and oral surgeons are helping in generating awareness,” added Gadre.
