Don’t be fooled by the sunny morning and beautiful bright sunshine—it is the weather playing pranks on your jolly good mood. Just when you felt the warmth of blue sky and even found recognisable shapes in the clouds above, it will pour like never before.

The meteorology department has said that the city will experience thunder showers in the late afternoons in the city. “There is enough clouding in the city owing to high level of moisture in the air. The water vapour in the air rises up and become clouds. This process is happening over late evening and morning hours, which is making the mornings very sunny,” said Dr B Puttanna, director-in-charge, Centre for Meteorology.

Because of this, the city has been experiencing rain in the peak afternoon, when the sun is supposed to be up in the sky, warming the earth. “There are other factors adding to this process. This is the North-East monsoon. In this season, the wind brings in moisture from Bay of Bengal. Along with this, there is a system of low pressure forming over Arabian Sea, near Mangalore, for two days. An associated upper air circulation will bring in rain to the state and significant amount to the city as well,” he said.

The city’s wind speed has also increased, which will mean colder winds blowing in the evenings. “We have noticed a slight increase in the wind speed as well. This will naturally happen as winter approaches. But the rains will slowly die down in a few weeks,” Puttanna said.
