The city roads will be safer for citizens on New Year’s eve as 60 additional CCTV cameras will be monitoring revellers behind the wheel. Since CCTV cameras are not working properly due to poor lighting, traffic police are installing lamps of over 2000W capacity to get clear view of traffic rule offenders.

“At present, there are about 160 CCTV cameras installed in all major junctions. This will help in reducing road accidents,” said a senior traffic police officer requesting anonymity.
The images captured by the cameras can see 360 degrees and will be relayed to the Traffic Management Centre where operators can zoom in when any traffic violation or other problems are spotted. The nerve centre at Ashoknagar operates 24 hours a day seven days in a week.

Besides curbing accidents, these cameras will act as a deterrent to crime, vandalism and hooliganism which revellers often indulge in under the influence of alcohol. “If breathalyser test finds the alcohol level in them exceeding 30 mg per 100 ml of blood, traffic police will slap a fine of Rs1,000. Our concern is public safety”, said BA Muthanna, DCP, traffic east division.

City police commissioner Shankar M Bidari said the CCTV cameras would also help them nab chain snatchers, pickpockets, eve teasers and other antisocial elements.

“We will keep an eye on the public on New Year’s eve for their safety,” Bidari said.
Studies have shown the presence of alcohol between 33% and 69% in fatally injured drivers, and between 8% and 29% in drivers who survived crashes.
