BJP MLA from Harihar, Davangere district, BP Harish, who was among the 19 MLAs who had signed the letter withdrawing support from the BJP government, on Thursday returned from Chennai. He said that he put his signature on the letter under duress. Harish filed a complaint in the Vidhana Soudha police station to this effect. His complaint did not mention any names.

Harish alleged that most of the ‘rebel’ MLAs had signed the letter under coercion, as they feared for their lives. Speaking at a press conference, Harish reiterated his loyalty to Yeddyurappa. He claimed that when the rebels  approached him, he alerted the chief minister that there was a rebellion brewing in the party. He said that the chief minister asked him to throw his lot in with the rebels, and be a ‘mole’ for the party.

“I had sensed that those who were miffed after the recent cabinet reshuffle, when Goolihatti Shekar and Shivanagaouda Naik were dropped from the ministry, would band together in rebellion. Preparations for the ‘Topple Yeddyurappa government’ project began a fortnight ago,” Harish said.

As a ‘mole,’ Harish said that he learnt the grand plan of the opposition. Leader of the opposition in the assembly, Congressman Siddaramaiah, was to be sworn in chief minister after the government was toppled; JD(S) MLA and son of former prime minister Deve Gowda, HD Revanna, would be sworn in deputy chief minister, and his younger brother and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy would be made a minister in the Union cabinet, Harish said.

“This is the grand conspiracy that brought the Congress and JD(S) together. They pumped in huge ‘resources’ to exploit the fissures in the BJP,” said Harish, who claimed that he attempted to convince the rebels that they were being led astray. “My efforts failed, and I escaped from there on Wednesday when home minister R Ashoka arrived in Chennai to mediate,” Harish said.
Excise minister MP Renukacharya was rebelling as he was eyeing the post of deputy CM, Harish claimed. In a late-night development,  Renukacharya said that he accepted chief minister BS Yeddyurappa as his leader.
