Simplex Infrastructure was in news again, this time for a crane accident that happened around 12.45 am on Tuesday near a metro construction site, when it crashed into the compound wall of Harishchandra Ghat.
The incident took place on Mahakavi Kuvempu Road when three men on board, including the driver operating the crane, jumped off the moving vehicle when its brake failed.
On Monday, Pijus Kanti Sil, 42, a Simplex employee, had succumbed to injuries he suffered when a heavy metal disc crushed his right hand as he was repairing a concrete pumping machine on Reach 2 near Nayandahalli.
Simplex is constructing the viaduct on Reach 3 from Swastik to Yeshwantpur.
The crane was coming from Malleswaram police station side at 12.45 am when the driver realised that the brake had failed.
Scared, he along with two others on board jumped off the vehicle and the crane hit the barricades and footpath before crashing into the compound wall of the burial ground at the corner.
“There was no one in the driver’s seat and the crane was rolling down the road smashing everything on its way. Finally, it crashed into the compound wall of Harishchandra Ghat,” said Manjunath D, a witness, whose shop is located near the burial ground wall.
“Thankfully, no one was injured. The police and Bescom officials arrived within 10 minutes,” he said. The crane also knocked off an electric pole at the corner of the compound wall and a tree. Forty houses located along three roads in Nagappa block had to go without power till 11am on Tuesday.
Six labourers were brought to clear the mess. It cost the Bescom Rs9,000 to repair the pole and Rs6,000 to clear the debris.
This is not the first time a crane has toppled during metro construction and certainly not the first one in this part.
“The corner of the burial ground has been broken twice before. We never came to know who exactly was responsible for the damage. Every time the wall was broken, we spent around Rs10,000 to repair it,” said Rafiuddin, joint secretary of Jamia Masjid Malleswaram.
This time, however, the owner of the crane called him to say they would pay him compensation. The graveyard belongs to Wakfs.
The crane was hired for metro work by Simplex Infrastructure. However, no one from BMRCL or Simplex came forward to remove the crashed crane.
BMRCL top brass have begun an inquiry into the accident and are checking with the contractor.
“Chief engineer and other top officials from BMRCL are looking into the possible negligence by the contractor. We will soon come out with results. We will try to remove the crane late in the night on Tuesday when traffic will cease to move on this stretch,” a spokesman of the BMRCL said.
