There was some consolation as MN Leelavathi received the president’s award at Glass House in Raj Bhavan from governor HR Bhardwaj. Despite the fate of her only son, Guruprasad, who died in an encounter with naxalites in Mavinahola, Chikmagalur district in November 2009, Leelavathi is yet to receive the compensation and pension promised to her.

“On Monday, my family members and I  met additional director-general of police (KSRP) GM Hayath. We asked about the compensation for my son’s loss, which the government had announced after his death. I was told that a letter had gone to the home department; a response was awaited. My husband and I are old now, and we cannot earn our own livelihood,” she said.

Guruprasad was 28-year-old when he died. His father, MC Nanjappa, is a farmer. His mother Leelavathi is a housewife. Nanjappa had given his farmland out on lease, as he had grown too old to work the fields.

The elderly couple has five daughters. “All my daughters are married. They are staying with their families. Guruprasad was our only son, and now there is nobody to take care of us. We have a coffee estate, but we do not get the labourers to work in it,” said Leelavathi.

“I am proud that my son served the nation and died in the encounter with naxalites. Today, as I receive the award on his behalf, though, I’m not in a state to celebrate as he was the only one to look after us in this age,” she said.

Guruprasad, who joined the police department in 1996, was hit by a bullet in his head and died on the spot during the encounter with naxalites. He was part of the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) which gunned down three naxalites in the fierce encounter.
