Bangalore: Karnataka has 45 autonomous colleges under seven universities. And the list of colleges aspiring to get autonomous status is also long. "But autonomy does not mean that one does not need to respect authority," said AS Srikanth, principal secretary, department of higher education. He was speaking at a seminar on leveraging technical education through autonomy organised by the Consortium of Autonomous Colleges (CAC) in Bangalore on Friday.
Referring to recent incidents happened in the Bangalore University, he said, "I am very disappointed that the incidents happened in one of the prestigious universities in the state. It is not autonomy but indiscipline."
"Learning, teaching and research are the three important aspects of higher education. Sensitising the administrative bodies towards academics is also a very important responsibility of these centres," he said.
K Purushothaman regional director (Kerala and Tamil Nadu) National Association of Software and Services Companies said, "By 2020 our industrial sector will need 50 million trained people. Our education system should be equipped to cater to such a huge need. At present there is no representation of corporate or industrial sector in the board of studies of most the universities. This is unfortunate. There should be at least two members from those sectors on the board of studies."
"We are not even discussing the industries' requirements in the academic councils or senates. Instead, we are playing blame games at each other," added Purushothaman.
