A cyclonic circulation and stormy condition in the Arabian Sea has put the state maritime fishing to a complete halt as over 6,000 fishing vessels have been recalled to the shore and anchored at 12 fishing ports across the coast, even as heavy rains lashed the coastal towns.

The unfavourable climate has resulted in heavy losses as over 12 lakh fishermen have returned home empty-handed.

“Each expedition costs not less than Rs20,000-Rs40,000. We had to return to the shore as we got the message that there is a big storm headed our way,” said Gopal Bengre, a fisherman.

The district administrations of three coastal districts have warned fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next two days.

Meanwhile, excessive rains have disrupted train services between Ratnagiri and Navisar in Karwar Ratnagiri sector of Konkan Railway.

A large portion of the retaining wall near Navisar collapsed on the track, affecting train services. Konkan Railway Corporation and Palakkad division of the Southern Railway have diverted the trains via Miraj, Londa, Panvel and Pune.
