Amid the pall of gloom that has befallen this farming town following the death of its son Sathish—a CRPF jawan who was killed in the fedayeen attack in Srinagar—the youth who had gathered for his funeral were emotionally charged up.

“If Pakistani terrorists have succeeded in killing our brother, we will enrich the Indian army by joining in hundreds,” one of them said, with the others nodding in agreement.  Groups of youth from Mandya, Sringapatnam, Malavalli, Maddur and a small group of NCC cadets from Mysore worked relentlessly for making Sathish’s funeral a befitting one.

“We have heard about the great cowardice the Pakistani terrorists have displayed time and again on Indian soil. This time, they have challenged us and, by God, we swear we will one day avenge Sathish’s death,” said Rakesh Gowda, a student of a Mandya-based polytechnic.

“His (Sathish’s) elder brother Harish has been serving in the CRPF for the last 10 years and has been stationed in Bhopal. Our youth are spirited in every aspect of life and soon we will start enrolling into the armed forces and make life difficult for all terror elements that torment our mother land,” thundered Nanjundappa, a youth leader from Malavalli.

“We have heard great tales of patriotism and heroism from the youth who have joined the army from Kodagu district. I shall personally motivate my friends in the college to visit the army website and register their names. The recruitment into the armed forces has been made easy. The registration can now happen online,” said Gangadhar, a young educated farmer, reflecting on the nuances of getting into the army.

Tahsildar of Mandya taluk, Ahobaliah, told DNA that all the colleges and other institutes were actively participating in the army recruitment drive.
