Beginning this year, the CBSE board has mass communication on offer as an elective for interested students at +2 level. However, the response in the first year has been lukewarm, as most schools in the city are contemplating offering it to students only from the next academic year.

The board had offered the subject on a pilot basis last year to a few schools.“This year, we have already opted for engineering, drawing and geography, and we were unsure about the response to a course like mass communication. Of late, we have started receiving enquires about the subject, so we are planning to apply for it in the coming year,” said Manjula Raman, principal of Army Public School.

“Students are probably taking time to take it up since it is not a run-of-the-mill course, especially at the school level,” she added.
Similar is the case with Delhi Public School, where they have applied for the course to be offered only in the next academic year.

“Last year, there were not enough takers, so we did not go ahead with it. But this year, we already have around 15 candidates who have enquired about the elective,” said Mansoor Ali Khan, secretary, Delhi Public School.

Most schools are thinking of offering the elective so that students can decide early if they wish to choose the course. “The interest amongst the students is rising because they realise it is a vocational course and it is a good idea to catch them young and start training them at the school level itself,” said Raman.

In the next academic year, DPS estimates that it will have 15 students opting for the elective at each of the three schools. “It will help students streamline their decisions early. It will definitely be useful to those who are serious about a career in this field,” said Khan.

The Gear Innovative International School too would opt for the course next year, after they make necessary arrangements. “By opting for it, we want to introduce students to professional courses earlier,” said principal M Srinivasan.
