Bangalore: This father will live with regret -- that he did not understand the depth of his daughter's love; that he stood in her way.

On Saturday night, police found the bodies of Vijay Kumar (23) and Suma (21), hanging from the ceiling in a house leased by Vijay at BHEL Layout in Pattanagere, Mysore Road, under the jurisdiction of the Rajarajeshwari Nagar police station.

Suma's father Kempegowda told reporters, "I never imagined that she would do this. Had I known, I would have agreed to her marriage with Vijay."

Police inspector Yogananda Kumar said Vijay had been sharing the house with another youth, Umesh.

On Saturday, Umesh returned home at around 10pm and waited for Vijay to open the door. Finding no response to his knocks, he informed neighbours, who looked through a window and saw the bodies hanging.

Vijay and Suma, natives of Kammasagara in Kanakapura taluk in Ramanagara district, had been in love for over five years, the police said. Vijay was an orphan and had been brought up by an uncle in Kammasagara. Suma's parents, who also lived in the same village, opposed the union as Vijay belonged to a different caste.

Two years ago, Vijay moved to Bangalore to take up a job as a driver with a private firm on MG Road. Suma, meanwhile, faced parental pressure to marry a man of their choice.

Suma's parents would introduce her to prospective grooms and urge her to consider marriage to them. Hearing of this, Vijay invited her to Bangalore, assuring her that they could get married. On the pretext of meeting her sister who also lives in the city, Suma arrived in Bangalore. On Friday night, the two met and weighed their options. Police have found no suicide note at the site.
