Midway through the 16-day padayatra to Bellary, the spirit of Congress leaders gained renewed vigour as wives of several leaders joined their husbands to keep their enthusiasm high.

Meenakshi Krishna Byre Gowda, Anitha Narendra Babu, Tabu Dinesh Gundu Rao, Keerthi Santosh Lad and Supriya Manjunath preferred to spend the weekend with their respective spouses, who are sweating it out on a 320km padayatra. The reports of swollen legs and body pains of the padayatris made them rush to take care of their life-partners.

Their presence brought a new sense of bonhomie and camaraderie to the walkathon as the other participants too joined the fun. Lad was in for more surprise as his parents too arrived to express their solidarity with their son.

Meenakshi said, “I wanted to walk step to step with Krishna, but it is not possible as I am a working woman. Today (Sunday) is a holiday, so I am here. After coming here I feel like accompanying him till the end of the yatra, but it is not possible. But I can assure you that I will come back the moment I am free.”

Was she missing Krishna for the last one week. “Yes. But not much as I was watching him through the electronic media and was in constant touch,” Meenakshi said.

Tabu was all energy as she said she would be glad to go the full distance. However, Dinesh wanted her to head home on Monday.
The five women struck an immediate bonding as they walked hand in hand. The folk art troupes and music made the new entrants the main attraction of the rally pushing back senior leaders Siddaramaiah and RV Deshpande.

The party top guns were happy to allow the young brigade hog the limelight with their wives as the electronic media followed them.
