The chief finance officer of a venture capital funding firm has been accused of raping the manager of the legal finance arm of his company.
According to the complainant, a 31-year-old married woman, the accused, Ajay Jalan, 41, had been exploiting her over the past two years.
The Cubbon Park police registered the complaint (FIR No. 0223/2010) on Sunday and were investigating.
An investigator, however, said there were certain technical issues involved in the case. “It’s technically a rape case,” the officer said without elaborating.
Jalan was yet to be arrested. The investigating officer said they wanted to verify the allegations, and if it was a consensual relationship gone sour.
“We are also checking why the woman remained quiet for two years. We are also looking into why she did not change the job if
she had a problem,” he said.
The victim reportedly stated in her complaint that her senior official had been exploiting her ever since she joined the company, located on Infantry Road, in October 2008.
The woman accused Jalan of making her stay back in office past 6pm, even after her colleagues had left.
“He initially discussed about my personal life and gradually started discussing about my sexual life. He then started making lewd comments about me, and although I wasn’t comfortable with the conversations, I couldn’t refuse it and overstayed (at work),” she said.
The victim said Jalan sexually exploited her first on October 24. “He asked me to stay back in the office for a meeting on October 24. Later he took me to the cabin of the managing partner, Hari Iyer, on the pretext of searching some documents and raped me.”
She claimed that Jalan apologised to her after the incident, and begged her not to reveal it to anyone.
The complainant added that he took her to several places and resorts and continued to exploit her.
“He even made videos of me in a compromising position and threatened to circulate the MMS if I discussed the incident with anybody. However, I confided in my husband, who asked me to register a complaint against Jalan,” she said.
