After being struck by a crane hook, Lino Tharakan, 24, a hotel employee, lay seriously injured in the street.
Pedestrians and drivers gawked as he writhed in pain but no one came to his aid.
Help came 40 minutes after the mishap and Tharakan, now recovering in a city hospital, wants to launch a campaign against Bangaloreans’ indifference to accident victims before leaving the city.
As usual, Tharakan was walking towards his workplace in Karthik Nagar around 6.30 pm last Thursday. Suddenly, a crane from a nearby work site came behind and its massive hook struck him down. Luckily, the heavy vehicle did not run over him. But he suffered injuries on his chest, hands and face.
“About 30 people stood as mute spectators as I cried for help. I begged them to shift me to any hospital nearby as my head was reeling. But no one came forward. Thankfully, after some time, Vijay M, an EMC employee, came to my rescue. He called an ambulance and shifted me to a hospital,” Tharakan said.
After shifting Tharakan to VIMS hospital in Marathalli, Vijay informed his family about the accident.
Dr Veerappa Reddy of VIMS hospital said Lino sustained injuries on his ribs. A surgery was done on his finger and he is recovering fast, he added.
Once he is fully recovered, Tharakan wants to leave the city forever.
“I will not stay in Bangalore. I hate this city. When Vijay was trying to help me, onlookers were trying to stop him. They told him that they had already informed police and the ambulance would be coming any moment. Vijay waited for some time and called amother ambulance which came in five minutes,” he said.
After getting discharged from hospital, Tharakan also wants to write a blog about his bad experience.
“I’ll update it in social networks like Facebook and Twitter. I want to create awareness against people's indifference to accident victims. They should change their attitude and try to help others. No one should go through what I went through,” he said.
A complaint has been registered with Old Airport traffic police station. The crane involved in the accident belonged to Taranath. Police have booked a case against him.
Son of Tharakan and Lissy, the youth hails from Thrissur in Kerala.
