Reviewing the increasing threat to city lakes, the rising deaths of fish and loss of biodiversity, the environment and ecology department is now mulling over the idea to give more power to the Lake Development Authority (LDA), which currently is nothing more than a society.

The death of hundreds of fish in Devarabeesanahalli lake on Marathahalli Ring Road is the latest instance that has awakened the department. Though the lake belongs to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the incident came to light only through the media. Neither the BBMP nor the LDA officials were aware of the fish dying in the lake for the past one week.

Taking serious note of all these, officials from the environment and ecology department are holding talks with those of other departments including revenue, public works department and ministers of the concerned departments to give more powers to the LDA.

Additional chief secretary of environment, ecology and forests, Meera Saxena said, “Looking at the present situation of the lakes in the city, it has been proposed to give more powers to the LDA. If the Act is amended, the LDA will have the powers to take back lakes from any civic agency, if it is not maintained well or even take legal action against the violators and polluters.”
