The abandoned mining area in Kudremukh is set to not only house the much-delayed commando training centre of the state police, but will also figure prominently in the state’s tourism map as a mining and eco-tourism spot.
The proposal to set up a commando training centre for the state police was taken in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. However, the plan got delayed since a suitable site for the centre could not be found.
The state government had decided to make the best use of Kudremukh’s flora and fauna. Mining has been stopped several years ago in the area. The tourism project had already been granted Rs5 crore.
“The centre had agreed for developing Kudremukh into an eco- and mining tourism hub. Now the state government will send a detailed project reportfor the central government’s approval,” home minister VS Acharya said.
Kudremukh Iron Ore Corporation Limited (KIOCL) had mooted the proposal of developing the area into an eco-tourism destination a year ago.The corporation is now developing it into a toursit destination.
