New Year’s Eve is a time to get drowned in alcohol for many. Several revellers booze and booze till they drop. And it is obvious that the first day of the New Year is spent tackling the hangover. Well, here are a few tips to get over the tipsiness and handle the hangover the best way.

It is difficult to suggest what the right quantity of alcohol is for each individual, said Dr Rajiv Moger, general physician, Apollo Hospital. “While 200 ml of whiskey is fine for a regular drinker, 100 ml may prove too much for a first timer. Thus individuals are expected to know their own limitations and drink accordingly. It is best to avoid hard drinks or just restrict it to a couple of drinks,” he said.
However, one best way to lessen the toxic effect is to eat well while boozing, to help delay the absorption of alcohol.

The span of a hangover also varies from person to person. “While some come out of it within hours, others may take a day. But, to reduce the hangover span, one should always stick to just one drink and never combine drinks,” said Dr Aravind Jagadish, general physician, BGS Global Hospital.

Hangovers mainly occur due to an electrolyte imbalance in the body, as high intake of alcohol leads to frequent urination, but the water intake is less. Citrus fruits contain a high level of electrolytes. Consumption of these fruits or their juices helps combat hangovers.

Another way to combat the hangover is to drink plenty of fluids the next day. “Any citrus fruit juice, butter milk, and even tender coconut helps overcome hangover,” Dr Aravind said. While doctors are fine with people downing a few pegs on New Year, here’s a strict “No” to those suffering from migraine, diabetes, severe cardiac complications and high blood pressure.
