Seeking admission to an engineering course in the state this year? You’re in luck.

The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has more seats for undergraduate engineering courses this academic year.

Compared to 2009, there are nearly 1,800 seats more. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) recently gave permission to the state government to continue the counselling process for engineering courses with the previous year’s seat matrix.

According to the seat matrix of 2009, the KEA has 36,524 seats for the undergraduate engineering course. The AICTE has also granted approval this year to seven new engineering colleges in the state. The newly approved engineering colleges are required to give 50% of their seats to the government. With this, the KEA gets an additional 1,766 seats this year.

“Earlier, we had only received the seat matrix for two new engineering colleges. Only on Monday, we learnt that all the seven new engineering colleges in the state have been granted AICTE approval. We had a meeting with the state higher education department officials, and requested them to send the revised seat matrix,” said an official from the KEA.

Meanwhile, the counselling process for the engineering seats, dates for which had been announced and then changed twice, is set to begin on July 14. Officials said that the whole process is expected to be completed in 25 days. “We will start the process from July 14 and finish it by August 8. We will conduct counselling without a break, even on Sundays and second Saturday we will allot seats,” KEA officials said.

For the first three days, KEA plans to allot seats for candidates ranked 1-100 in the Common Entrance Test. Later, those ranking below these will be offered counselling. KEA employees who have been deputed for counselling work say that it is difficult for them to allot more than 100 seats a day. “We know the difficulties we are going to face, but we need to stick to our schedule and finish the process in 25 days,” an official said.
