Minister of medical education, health and family welfare, SA Ramdas, said on Tuesday that a report would be submitted to the Union government, requesting an increase in the number of seats at all teaching hospitals in the city.
“We are submitting a report tomorrow, where we are requesting for an increase in seats at both the undergraduate and the postgraduate levels. It will be a `1,500-crore programme,” he said at a programme organised by the department of Ayush.
During the event, 50 people, including the minister, practised yoga in Cubbon Park, in an effort to create awareness about the International Conference on Yoga, Naturapathy and Arogya, which will take place from February 9 to February 13.
“The World Health Organisation has said that by 2020, India will be the temple of non-communicable diseases. In case of diseases like diabetes, preventive measures are the best way to combat such diseases. It is important to make people aware of the importance of alternative methods such as yoga,” said Ramdas.
According to him, the government also has plans to take the healthy living campaign to the grass-roots level.
“We will be adopting 10 Ayush grampanchayats. This scheme will be launched in February. We will be screening the people and it will take three years to see to it that all are healthy. This programme will hopefully be able to set an example for the country and the state,” he said.
