LPG consumers all over the state are angry and confused over the state government’s verification process. They say the information was inadequate and misleading and fear their cooking gas connection will be cut.

Latha Kamath, a consumer of Mannagudda, said: “I’ve legally acquired two connections after paying the deposit to my distributor as early as 1999. Does the government want to take away all my cylinders just because it has the same address and RR (electric connection) number?”

Mukund Rao of Car Street said: “I logged into the website of the department of food, civil supplies and consumer Affairs. It said ‘this connection is under verification’. It also said multiple cylinders match with the RR number.”

Some consumers suspected a conspiracy.
“The government is trying to force the middle class and upper middle class consumers into going in for expensive private sector gas connection.

It will make way for private sector operators.  To understand this situation, one should read George Orwell’s political parody Animal Farm,” said KS Eshwaran, a former professor of economics from Mysore.

“There cannot be fake gas connection as we deliver it to the house of the consumer. Oil companies are not asking us to co-ordinate with the food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department or cut off gas connection to the consumers. They need to maintain their subscriber base,” said a LPG distributor.

Sources in the ministry said: “It took one of the largest drives to collect this data base . Oil companies had never approved this method, but it worked.”
