The Karnataka government has opposed the Centre’s decision to conduct a national-level single common entrance test for medical undergraduate courses from next year.

Reacting to the decision at a meeting in New Delhi on Monday, state medical education minister SA Ramdas said, “I have already written to the Centre asking some questions on the issue. I am yet to receive a reply to them. So, we have decided not to agree with the idea of a single CET.”

The Centre only has the right to allot ranks, said Ramdas adding that a mandatory single CET will not do justice to local students.

“The Centre should restrict itself to allotting ranks and leave the distribution of seats to the states,” said Ramdas.

Students from various states and boards will not be of uniform standards. “A single test would make things difficult for students. The prevailing admission system is perfect and we are ready to fight it out with the Centre to retain the same,” the minister said.

On Monday, the Union government held a meeting with representatives from CBSE, officials from the Union health and family welfare department and Medical Council of India.

The meeting agreed in principle to have a national-level single CET for undergraduate medical courses. It was also decided that CBSE, and not MCI, will be conducting the single CET.

The Centre is expected to apprise the Supreme Court of the meeting’s decision. The apex court had asked the Centre for its opinion, after a few deemed universities approached it over the issue.
