It was a faceoff that many waited to see. When governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj and chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who have been at each other’s jugular for a while, shared the dais at an event in Bangalore on Wednesday, there was no trace of bitterness. The two leaders were all smiles, as though they had been buddies for life.

Yeddyurappa welcomed Bhardwaj to the dais of the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) with a warm handshake.
The governor outdid the chief minister, telling the audience that chief minister BS Yeddyurappa had been working very hard for the development of Karnataka.

The two leaders sat next to each other, and were seen whispering into each other’s ears. They shared jokes and laughed, as those around them gawked in disbelief, wondering what might be the topic of their conversation. Amid the animated whispering, the governor and the chief minister shook hands as if congratulating each other.

Delivering the inaugural address, Bhardwaj  said Yeddyurappa had a massive majority, and there could be no doubt of that. Seeking to play down the
differences between the two, Bhardwaj praised Yeddyurappa as a very hard working leader.

“Yeddyurappa works 17 to 18 hours a day to make Karnataka the number one state. I have nothing against him personally. We are friends. Political tensions are irrelevant,” he said.
I won’t quit, only Prez can recall me
Governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj on Wednesday scoffed at the ruling BJP’s demand for his recall, saying that he was subject to the doctrine of pleasure and he cannot be recalled by any person except the president, who appointed him.

“I am conscious of the fact that I have to act fully in accordance with the Constitution,” he said, adding: “It must be understood that the chief minister is the elected representative of the state. Massive majority he has got, nobody ever disputes that, and we are friends. These political tensions are irrelevant. We have to dedicate ourselves to the Constitution and to the law.”
He said that as far as he was concerned, he had no plans of doing anything wrong but “I am bound by the Constitution,” Bhardwaj said, explaining that he wants the Karnataka government to be one of good reputation.

Quoting from the Upanishads, he said, “A guest is like god.” As governor, he is the guest of the state.
