Following Wednesday’s terror attack on the Delhi high court premises, state home minister R Ashoka, accompanied by Karnataka high court (HC) chief justice JS Khehar, inspected security arrangements at the HC here on Thursday. There were many reasons for concern and Ashoka issued orders to scale up security arrangements.

CCTVs will be installed at various strategic spots in and around the court premises. Baggage scanners will be installed and bags and briefcases carried by lawyers and litigants will be subjected to compulsory checks. After his visit to the high court, Ashoka chaired a high-level meeting to review the HC’s security arrangements.

Later, he said security personnel would be provided with modern weapons and communication equipment.

Public entry to the premises will be restricted to allow only lawyers and litigants. Those without valid ID cards will be denied entry. Only vehicles of judges and the advocate general will be allowed to enter and park on the premises. Other vehicles will have to park in the Cubbon Park parking area, added Ashoka.

The government has placed the state on high alert, with special emphasis on Bangalore. The process of intelligence gathering will be increased and police vigil at public places—such as bus-stands, railway stations, malls and airport—would be stepped up by installing CCTV cameras. Expressing the state’s inability to provide security to all government and private premises,

Ashoka requested organisations to  set up their own security.  The state will evolve guidelines for the police to tackle terrorism and a committee has been set up to suggest guidelines, he said. “The state is capable of facing any challenge from terrorists.

The Karnataka Industrial Security Force has been raised as an elite anti-terrorist force with a sanction to recruit 3,000 personnel. Already, 300 personnel have been recruited and a unit of 80 personnel has completed commando training.

They’ll be acquainted with sensitive spots like the Vidhana Soudha and HC,” said Ashoka.
