After the food and civil supplies department simplified the procedures to submit documents for hassle-free LPG supply, the department has been flooded with documents.

A day after the department announced that copies of documents showing LPG consumer number and RR number of the electricity bill could be submitted to the department through registered post or fax or even submitted on the department website, documents started pouring in. On Wednesday, till 6.30 pm, documents from 800 consumers were received through fax, said a senior official.

“We have connected the fax machine to the big printer and also modem. From morning, we were receiving a flood of documents. We’ve assigned two personnel to compile the documents submitted by fax. More than 150 documents were received through personal delivery,” he said. “We have given a link in our http://ahara.kar.nic.in website. People can log on to the website and submit the scanned documents,” he said.

Meanwhile, the government is gearing up to crush the gas mafia. “Like the oil mafia in Maharastra, gas mafia in the state is powerful. After our department started the elimination of bogus ration cards, gas mafia has started threatening me and our officials. They are putting all kind of pressure.  But I don’t care and we will definitely streamline the gas distribution in the coming days,” said energy, food and civil supply and consumer affairs minister Shobha Karandlaje.

“Gas mafia is misusing the subsidy. We will not allow this to continue. We will eliminate the gas mafia and help consumers to get gas cylinders on time,” she said.
According to figures available with the food and civil supplies department, the city has 21.33 lakh LPG domestic connections which are handled by 89 gas agencies. Of these, nearly 50% of the supply goes for commercial purposes.

“Delay in supply of cylinders to consumers is not because of non-availability of gas, but due to diversion of supply for commercial use by the agencies. Domestic LPG cylinder costs Rs365 while commercial cylinder costs Rs1,300. Most of the gas agencies in city are diverting domestic LPG cylinders for commercial use and pocketing Rs1,000 per cylinder,” said a senior official, adding that agencies supply gas promptly when paid extra, but harass poor consumers.

According to 2001 census, the population of Karnataka stands at 6.25 crore. Of 1.25 crore families, 1.05 crore APL and BPL families are eligible for ration cards. At least 15 lakh to 20 lakh people do not have ration cards.

“In some villages, there are bogus cards. In some areas, families own four to five ration cards. Because of this duplication in ration cards, most of the government’s popular schemes like Sandhya Suraksha and Baghyalakshmi are being misused,” the minister said.
