Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda called on governor HR Bhardwaj on Monday to discuss the proposed ordinance to remove encroachment from government land and strengthen the laws to punish land grabbers.
Implementation of the recent report on encroachment of government land, submitted by the task force headed by retired IAS officer V Balasubramanian, figured prominently during the meeting, sources said.
Bhardwaj, while interacting with reporters before meeting Gowda, said he would discuss the issue with the CM. He said if the government was serious about dealing with encroachment, he was willing to pass an ordinance so that the task force’s report could be implemented and the land grabbers could be punished.
He said as per the report, there was rampant encroachment of land, lakes and water bodies in and around Bangalore.
“If this continues and action is not taken, Bangaloreans would be left with no water to drink in a few years,” he said.
Bhardwaj, who inaugurated an audio-visual ‘Sky Theater’ programme at the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium on Monday, said politicians should not be ridiculed.
He was replying to the comment of former ISRO chairman UR Rao, who had said that the politicians could be sent to Mars.
“Life can flourish in some of the planets like Mars. Oxygen can be generated by planting trees on Mars and people can live there and am sure that most of us would like to send our politicians there,” Rao had quipped.
In response, Bhardwaj said, “Do not ridicule politicians. At the time of elections do not elect dishonest politicians.”
