A student of Rajarajeshwari Engineering College allegedly tried to commit suicide by jumping from the parapet wall of the college on Thursday evening, but landed in the hospital with fracture on both his legs and minor head injuries.

Chaitanya Murthy, a mechanical engineering student, managed to escape death, as the height of parapet was only about 15-20 feet high.

He is currently undergoing treatment in Rajarajeshwari Hospital on Mysore Road.

According to police, the victim, Murthy might have resorted to this drastic step, as he was suspended by the college administration over a dispute with a girl student, who had turned down his love proposal.

On Wednesday, Murthy and the girl Sarayu, had a fight after an argument which resulted in him slapping her in front of some students. She complained to her lecturers about the incident, who let him off with a warning.

Unhappy with her lecturers’ action, Sarayu informed her parents about it, who lodged a complaint against Murthy with the principal.

The principal suspended Murthy for two years. He also asked Sarayu’s parents to file a complaint with the police.

“Sarayu's father was a retired employee of the police department and he knew the consequences that Murthy would have to face if he was suspended. So he asked me not to suspend him,” said principal, Bhagya Shetty.

According to police, Murthy was forcing Sarayu to love him and frequently ragged her.

Following the suicide attempt, about 20 members of the college alumni staged a protest on Friday morning and broke the window panes against the suspend order.
