The robbery at Chemmanur Jewellers in Jalahalli on December 7 might have been an insider’s job, police suspect.

Two motorcycle-borne miscreants had struck at the shop and fled with 2.7kg of jewellery. They had used a motorcycle’s shock absorber and pepper spray to carry out the crime. “When we checked the CCTV video, we were not able to see the culprits’ faces,” said an investigating police officer. The miscreants were wearing helmets. Therefore, projecting the footages on a 35-mm projector screen, too, proved futile. They did not leave behind fingerprints either. Once they emptied the pepper spray in the shop, the CCTV footage wasn’t clear, said another police officer. Earlier, the police had said that the jewellery shop’s CCTV cameras were not working. The police had said it so that the culprits do not get alarmed and go into hiding.

“We have questioned some employees. We suspect somebody from the shop is involved in the robbery. It will be revealed shortly,” said the police officer, adding that the miscreants probably hail from Mangalore. A police officer said they were trying to zero in on the shop from where the miscreants bought pepper spray. He said the duo did not buy it in Peenya. They might have bought it from a shop near Majestic or KR Market, he said.
Six teams have been formed to investigate the case. Cashier Suji, who was assaulted, underwent treatment in a hospital and has been discharged, while Sreejith and Ambarish, the security guard, sustained minor injuries.
