A Janata Dal (Secular) leader has lodged a police complaint saying he has been receiving extortion calls from outside the country.

Prakash Babu aka Kabbadi Babu reportedly told the police that the caller, who had identified himself only as ‘SS’ from Hong Kong, demanded Rs5 crore.

The politician received the first call in his Jayanagar office telephone on January 11. The man demanded the money and disconnected. A little while he called again, and had a pep talk.

The caller also enquired how the leader’s son has been doing.

The unidentified man also asked about Babu’s cable TV business.

Babu received another call two days later, again demanding Rs5 crore. The next day, the politician lodged a police complaint.

A few days later Babu received another call from a man, who identified himself as Sunil from Bellary. Sunil told him the previous callers were Dawood Ibrahim’s henchmen, and that he called to settle the deal. Following this call, Babu filed another police complaint in January 28.

The Jayanagar police, meanwhile, said someone known to Babu might have made the extortion calls. The police said they were also checking with the Interpol the telephone numbers Babu had provided.
