JD(S)-Congress alliance hardly a threat: state BJP

The state BJP is keeping its fingers crossed. The party is hoping President Pratibha Patil would invite LK Advani to form the next government. BJP’s biggest worry is JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy’s secret sneak meet with Sonia Gandhi at 10 Janpath on Tuesday. The meet, party insiders told DNA, is an attempt to destablise the Karnataka government by supporting a non-BJP force at the Centre.

A dozen disgruntled BJP legislators held a secret meeting on Friday to discuss the party strategy after the Kumaraswamy meet. Honnali MLA Renukacharya, who chaired the meeting, rubbished ‘destablisation’ rumours and said state members should get a fair share if BJP comes to power in the Centre.

Transport minister R Ashok slammed the JD(S)-Congress meet. “Such alliances will not work. We too have enough tricks up our sleeve. The BJP government is solid like a rock and it will last its full term of five years,” he said. The Congress, however, is unfazed by the BJP opinion.

KPCC president RV Deshpande said his party had no plans to bring down the government by joining hands with JD(S). The state BJP believes it will get the required numbers. Both UPA and NDA are holding strategy sessions and exploring possibilities of roping in as many parties into their fold to shore up their numbers.

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Advani on Friday held a series of meetings with senior leaders of their parties and allies to discuss possible post-poll situations.
Both the groupings were making efforts to keep their alliances intact besides roping in Third Front constituents, particularly BSP, JD(U), AIADMK, TDP, BJD and PMK which are expected to win a substantial number of seats.
