Mining scam-accused former minister Gali Janardhana Reddy seems to be quite happy with the court’s decision to extend his custody with CBI officials in Bangalore. He looks more relaxed than he was when lodged in Chanchalaguda Central Jail in Hyderabad, where he was kept since his arrest from his Bellary house on September 5, 2011.

Sources close to Reddy said that in Chanchalaguda Jail, Reddy was on the verge of depression after having to bear the unbearable stench at the Hyderabad jail for nearly five months and for being put through the hardships of a regular jail life.

Reddy had no option but to bear the stench as a drain passed right outside the cell in which Reddy was lodged—a common prisoner’s cell in which he had to sleep on the hard floor.

On being taken into custody last September, this was a sudden and a forced change in lifestyle for Reddy.

It was a life far removed from the luxurious helicopter rides, cushy beds and aides at his beck and call.

He was known for his helicopter rides from Bellary to Bangalore.

In the Hyderabad jail, Reddy was forced to eat what all convicts and under-trials ate.

Now, sources said, CBI officials—under whose custody he remains till March 16— provide him with food.

He also found the surroundings of the CBI office in Ganganagar, as well as those in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, where he was taken to appear before CBI special court, “much more hygienic” when compared with Chanchalaguda jail. Sources said the CBI officials in Bangalore had also allowed Reddy to get his own clothes, blankets and other personal items from his home in Bellary.

Reddy was not given any special treatment in Chanchalaguda because the AP court had not granted it.

When Reddy’s brother G Somashekar Reddy and followers went to meet him in Chanchalaguda jail, they invariably lamented over the way their leader was forced to live a life of hardship, sources said.

The relaxation showed on his face for the first time since his arrest.
