Bangalore: A 33-year-old software engineer, jailed on a complaint by his wife, allegedly committed suicide by consuming an overdose of a prescribed drug at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison here.

Police said Shubhankar Kyathenkan, a native of Jamshedpur, died in Victoria Hospital on Saturday morning, a day after he was found unconscious in his cell.

Kyathenkan had been jailed since June 27, after his wife, Nandini, filed a complaint
against him with the Commercial Street police. Remanded to judicial custody, he was facing 12 charges, including dowry harassment and attempt to murder.

Kyathenkan, a software engineer with Tata Consultancy Services, was a resident of Gangadhar Chetty Road near Commercial Street. He went into depression after being jailed and was undergoing treatment at the prison hospital. Police said he was prescribed amitriptyline, an anti-depressant, by the jail doctor. He allegedly took an overdose of this drug to commit suicide.

His father Phoolkanth, brother Divakar and other relatives received his body after a post-mortem examination.

Kyathenkan married Nandini, a native of Baroda, two years ago, after they met on a matrimonial website. Their marriage hit the rocks a year later, and they filed a divorce petition.
