Two Tamil Nadu ministers were recently in the news when they left an assaulted policeman to bleed to death in Tirunelveli district of that state.

But Sandalwood star Jaggesh showedthe stuff heroes are made of when he personally took charge of an accident victim stuck under a moving train’s wheels and managed to get him medical care well within the stipulated hour.

However, doctors are yet to declare the 29-year-old victim, painter Vijay Kumar from Sriramapuram, out of danger. Excessive bleeding at the accident site has rendered his condition critical. However, the doctors were confident that Vijay Kumar would survive.

Around 10.30 pm on Monday, Jaggesh, BJP leader and vice-chairman of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), was at the City railway station to see off transport minister, R Ashok, who was waiting for the Hampi Express. As soon as the train halted at the platform, they heard cries for help. Ashok and Jaggesh rushed their personal staff to check, who found a man trapped under the train’s wheels.

As nobody appeared to be doing the needful, Jaggesh immediately took charge of the rescue operation. “It was sad to see the man wailing and no one around even moving a finger. The man needed to be pulled out immediately. I got the policemen on duty to getrailway officials to the spot. The train was made to move a little to help pull the man from under the wheels. My gunman, Raghavendra, jumped onto the tracks and with the help of others lifted the man onto the platform. However, both his legs were almost severed. Meanwhile, minister Ashok summoned an ambulance by calling up 108,” the actor said.

Ashok gave Jaggesh Rs10,000 to cater to the injured man’s immediate medical expenses, and continued with his journey. Railway police sub-inspector Subbanna said with the actor personally in charge, things moved swiftly. The popular actor personally attended to the injured man and took care of the treatment.

“Dr BG Tilak and his team performed an emergency surgery and amputated his legs, as there appeared to be no possibility of either retaining or rejoining either of the limbs. One leg was cut below the knee, and the other above the knee. Doctors said they would try to save one of the legs which had all the nerves in tact, but that would have been a medical miracle given his condition,” Jaggesh said.

On Tuesday, Jaggesh was back in the hospital. The actor, who stayed on till evening at the hospital, said that the man’s parents were assured the best of treatment free of cost. Jaggesh refused to take credit for his action and said that he had only performed the duty of a normal citizen.
