City police recently arrested 11 women from a bar who were working there as dancers; the employees and the manager of the bar were also arrested.

Ashokanagar police made the arrests after raiding Chandni Bar and Restaurant on Castle Street, which is a kilometre away from the police station, on Tuesday evening. The police had got a tip-off that the bar hosts a live band and has hired women as dancers.
Policeman poses as customer

Acting on the information, police constable Gangadhar went to the bar in civil clothes, posing as a customer, and found that the charges were indeed true. He intimated this to Ashokanagar police inspector Jagadish HS via mobile phone.

The police team then swung into action. Jagadish’s report said policemen were deployed outside the bar to prevent anyone from coming in or going out of the watering hole during the raid.

Another team of policemen stormed into the bar. They found that 11 skimpily clad women were performing to live music and the customers were showering money on them. The girls, the musicians, and the employees and the manager of the bar were arrested.

Also, the police seized about Rs25,000, which the customers had showered on the girls, along with other paraphernalia from the bar. Jagadish said the police would write to the excise department to cancel the bar’s licence for violation of terms.

The bar manager, Raju Bhaskar, 36, confessed to the police that the live band had been performing at their joint for quite some time. The bar owner Mahadevaiah has licence just for the bar but he decided to have a live band and dancers to attract more customers. Mahadevaiah was not at the bar during the raid and the police are looking out for him.

Hiring as bartender, employing as dancers
Investigation revealed that Mahadevaiah used to hire the women by telling them they would be working as bartenders.

All the women are in their 20s and were brought to Bangalore from other cities through agents. They were being given good remuneration along with food and good accommodation, Jagadish said.

He added that the women were given a posh apartment to live in, in Purvankara Apartment in JP Nagar.

Another police officer who was part of the raid said 24x7 security was also provided to them so that they don’t flee or start offering their services elsewhere.
