Hari Menon can't wait till December 16. The 45-year-old writer is gung-ho and geared up for the 2011 edition of the Tour of Nilgiris (TFN), which begins next week. Menon, a regular since the tour started in 2008, says it's his love of cycling that attracts him to become a part of the tour.
At least 70 cyclists, including Menon, will take part in this year's TFN and will ride to Nilgris, pedalling through Mysore, Hassan, Madikere, Kannur, Sultan Bathery, Ooty, and finishing the tour at Kodanad View Point.
TFN, known to be the longest cycle ride in India, will cover 860km over eight days. This time, the riders will cover terrains across three wildlife sanctuaries and mountains. "While the ride is challenging at times, it gives the best opportunity for a group tour with likeminded people," said Menon.
The route offers breathtaking scenery and exposes riders to a great biodiversity rich in flora and fauna. "The event will commence from Parade Grounds on MG Road and the participants will cycle through Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and ride up to 2,240 metres above sea level in this trip," said Sridhar Pabbisetty, co-founder of Ride-A-Cycle Foundation (RACF). RACF is organising the event.
"An ambulance will follow the riders during the trip. Moreover, four support stations will be set up at various locations during the tour. Riders can take refreshments and relax for a while at these spots. Every day, on an average, the cyclists plan to ride for 10-11 hours," added Pabbisetty.
The tour is aimed at reviving cycling and popularising the benefit of using it as a mode of transport as it eases traffic congestion and is environment-friendly, he added.
This trip provides competitive sections on certain climbs and flat courses, aimed to test the riders' grit. The distance will not be longer than 40 km a day, with options for riders to ride individually or as a team.
"While it is not necessary to be a professional cyclist to participate in a trip like this, you need to maintain the requisite physical fitness," said Menon. At least 70 cyclists will participate in this year's TFN and will ride to Nilgris, pedalling through Mysore, Hassan, Madikere, Kannur, Sultan Bathery, Ooty, and finishing the tour at Kodanad View Point
