If the transfer of two police officers by the state government to placate agitating lawyers made you think that all was well between them, then you are wrong. Policemen and advocates aren’t done with each other, not yet.

On Tuesday, tensions between the two warring parties boiled over yet again as a group of advocates assaulted a head constable and a woman constable at the Magistrate Court premises on Nrupatunga Road.

The incident happened when head constable Basavaraju (50) and woman constable Roopa (21)—both attached with the Ulsoor Gate Women’s Police Station—had gone to produce an accused person before the court. The police said the incident happened around 5 pm.

A few advocates first targeted and assaulted Basavaraju. When Roopa questioned the advocates as to why they had assaulted her colleague, the group attacked her as well.

Basavaraju said he was assaulted by 25 to 30 advocates. “When I entered the court premises, the lawyers started screaming ‘catch him’,” said Basavaraju. “Then they assaulted me. I handed over the accused to Roopa and tried to flee, but they did not let me go. They also assaulted Roopa.”

BR Ravikanthe Gowda, DCP (central), said the police had identified nearly 12 advocates and will take action against them.
Both the injured police personnel were taken to Mallya Hospital for treatment after the incident. The Ulsoor Gate police have registered a case against the advocates.

Why the attack?
The Ulsoor Gate Women’s Police Station had arrested a person named Khadar Khan, a resident of Tavarekere, on Tuesday in connection with a dowry harassment case. Basavaraju and Roopa, who had taken the accused to the Magistrate Court, were refused entry into the court hall by a group of advocates.

During the heated exchange, advocates alleged that Basavaraju had assaulted advocates on March 2, after the police ordered a lathicharge following the violence at the City Civil Court complex.
