ISRO to map hill area in Zhariwad

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will be entrusted with the task of mapping Zhariwad hill area in Kaduwad village of Karwar taluk to determine the causes of landslide that occurred last week.

Speaking to the DNA, chairman of the Karnataka State Coastal Development Authority B Nagaraja Shetty said, “We are going deep into the cause of the landslide. We have also sought clarification from the seismic specialists at various institutes tofind whether the landslide was caused by any seismic activity.”

Shetty, who returned to Mangalore after overseeing the relief operations, said Uttara Kannada district administration would send an official request to the ISRO in a couple of days to this effect.

He said all the 19 bodies have been recovered from the site and their identities have been established. The state government has also cleared the compensation of Rs1 lakh for the families of each of the victims who died in the mishap. The compensation cheque has been handed over to the next of kin already.

Karwar town, which had the worst bout of flooding in recent years, is limping back to normalcy.
