Meeting your girlfriend for a date? Think again before you take her to a coffee shop, for the prices of coffee, tea, milk shakes, ice-creams, and other dairy products are on the verge of skyrocketing, creating a big hole in your pocket.

Soon, the milk price will be hiked by Rs3, which means a litre of milk will soon cost Rs24 per litre. But the saving grace is that the cost of milk is less in Karnataka, when compared to other states.

One cannot blame the government too as the cost of high-bred cows has also increased in the past three years.

“Three years ago, the price of a cow was about Rs25,000 to 30,000. But this has gone up to Rs60,000 now. These are in high demand from other states, too, as they give nine to 10 litres of milk.

“This has left us with no choice but to help farmers,” said AS Premnath, managing director, KMF.

Hotels and sweetshop owners say that this will impact the production, leaving them with no choice but to increase the prices of products.

On the impact of price hike of milk, Vasudev Adiga, president, Hotel Owners’ Association said: “Hotels use milk for various purposes, including tea, coffee, badam milk, sweets, and savouries. If the price of milk is increased, we are left with no choice but to increase the price of milk products.”

Since this has come at a time when other products too have seen a price hike, the hotels say that they will have to increase the price of products to break even or make marginal profits.

“We will either increase prices or decrease volume of the servings in order to make profits,” he said.

One cup of coffee in Bangalore costs about Rs10. This is likely to go up by 10% to 15%. Similarly, butter dosa or ghee dosa will also cost 10% to 15% more.

“Even the cost of curd cost Rs30. We will also need to pay our staff and maintain other facilities,” he said.

The sweet shops owners have decided to increase the cost of all milk sweets, such as milk peda, ras malai, rasagullas by Rs20. “We don’t increase the price of sweets unless the price of raw materials goes up. In the last three months, the prices of LPG, coffee powder, sugar, flour, and oils have all gone up. Now the main ingredients' price is also increased.

This leaves us with no choice but to increase the price of sweets,” said AG Mohan, general manager, Adayar Ananda Bhavan.

“The price of coffee and tea will increase by Rs2,” he added.

These prices are likely to go up further just like the prices of petrol.

“If this price is hiked, we will have to increase the cost of sweets and savouries or decrease the quantity being served,” said Srinivasa Kumar, owner of Srinivasa Sweets Shop, Malleswaram.
