While Kumar V Jagirdar’s legal battle against cricketer Anil Kumble over impersonation remains pending before the high court, the Directorate of Prosecution has given a clean chit to Kumble. Jagirdar is the former husband of Kumble’s wife.
Chandrashekhar G Hiremath, deputy director of prosecution, has told the police that Kumble neither declared himself to be the biological father of his stepdaughter nor forged Jargirdar’s signature while applying for the renewal of her passport.
According to the Directorate of Prosecution’s letter to the police, Kumble declared himself the parent/guardian of his stepdaughter and signed in the space against ‘guardian’ in the form.
The letter said neither the complaint nor the documents made available to the department for verification disclosed any kind of forgery, cheating or impersonation by either Kumble or his wife Chetana. Hence, the directorate concluded that the Kumbles had not committed any of the offences they have been accused of.
Based on Jagirdar’s complaint, the Bharati Nagar police had on December 30 issued a notice to Kumble to appear before the investigating officer for clarification.
Kumble had reportedly told the police on January 2 that in applying for the renewal of his stepdaughter’s passport he had signed as her guardian and not father. “Since I had undertaken only the financial responsibilities, I have signed in the appropriate column of the passport (annexure H) as guardian who is protecting and taking care of the minor child who is staying with us,” the cricketer had said in his clarification.
As far as Chetana Kumble is concerned, she signed against the annexure of mother in the passport, hence the allegation of impersonation, fraud and forgery or abetment does not arise at all, he said. Considering this, the Bharati Nagar police have dropped the case filing B (false) report.
