The All India Imams Council (AIIC), New Delhi, has opposed the police action against a rural mosque for using loudspeaker to give the daily sermon.
According to secretary of the Mangalore branch of the AICC, Ibrahim Khaleel, the police have illegally arrested the Imam of Andenadka Jumma Masjid and detained him on charges of giving the sermon over loudspeaker five times a day without taking police permission.
“There are other temples and prayer houses that also use loudspeakers for airing bhajans on a daily basis but the police have chosen only our cleric to penalise,” Khaleel said.
The police, however, defended the arrest, saying that the mosque committee had not informed the police or taken permission to use loudspeaker.
