The 5.6 lakh aspirants for Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) from across the country will now have a chance to view their own answer scripts online, and see for themselves how they fared.

The answer key for this year’s IIT-JEE exam, held on April 8, has already been posted on the JEE website and on Saturday, individual answer scripts will also be posted for students to check.

“Right now students can see the right answers and cross-check, but on May 5 we will also be displaying individual answer scripts, so students can compare those with the answer key,” an office member from IIT Madras said.

“Students who find any error in evaluation can lodge a complaint online, and we will see if there is any basis in their claims,” he said. The time period for lodging complaints is between May 5 and 10. “The updated answer scripts will be available by May 14,” he added.

The final results with the cut-off marks will be announced on May 18.

The move will bring in transparency in checking of papers, even though answer keys are nothing new.

“We ourselves published the answer script the day after the exams. But yes, we will be verifying if we got everything right,” said Ajay Antony, vice-president TIME.

As for cut-offs, he said, it will be nearly impossible to predict in advance; even though the answer scripts will be out sooner than the results. “That requires a massive effort, but we already have a fair idea of the students most likely to clear the cut offs,” Antony added.
