Teachers at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) have expressed their reservation over a new performance appraisal scheme as per the recommendations of a committee, appointed by the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry.

The issue was raised at the board of governors meeting, headed by Mukesh Ambani, chairperson and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited, on Wednesday.

Since the faculty members are divided over the issue, consensus still eludes on how to rate a teacher’s performance in one of India’s elite B-schools.

Ajit Balakrishnan, chairperson, IIM-Calcutta, who heads the committee on faculty and research of IIMs formed by the HRD ministry, had earlier recommended, as part of performance appraisal and compensation of faculty members, that each teacher must devote a minimum of 160 hours of teaching a year.

A teacher of IIMB, on condition of anonymity, said that several faculty members had opposed the move and raised the issue with the director of IIMB, Professor Pankaj Chandra.

“The issue is still to be resolved. We are waiting for the final verdict,” added the teacher. Ambani, who is also the chairman of IIMB’s board of governors, along with director of IIMB Professor Pankaj Chandra, and other members of the top decision making body of the institute, had several hours of discussion on issues related to various aspects of governance of the B-school.

The members of the board of governors had also decided not to increase the fee structure of their flagship post graduate programme (PGP) for 2011-13.

“The institute will retain its fee structure of last year at Rs13 lakh for PGP students," said an official of the institute.
