“It is true that I beat my daughter Neha Afreen.” This was the statement given by Umar Farooq, Neha’s father, to the KG Halli police. Initially, Farooq denied he battered his child, but cracked during interrogation.

In his statement, Farooq said: “On March 30, around 12.30 am, I took the baby from the bed and began beating her. Neha started to cry and Reshma Banu (his wife) woke up. I had the intention to kill her because she is a girl.”

He said Reshma took the baby from him and breastfed the baby to make her stop crying. At 4 am on April 4, Farooq tried to kill his daughter. “I closed her mouth with a dupatta and put a pillow and blanket on her. Reshma woke up and enquired about Neha. I told she might be on the bed. Reshma then saved Neha.”

At 10 am on April 5, Reshma was feeding the milk and biscuits. Farooq told her to go to a shop to buy household items and offered to feed the baby instead. After Reshma left, Farooq battered the baby. She began bleeding from the mouth and then vomited. “I got scared when I saw blood and put Neha to sleep on the bed,” confessed Farooq. When Reshma returned home, she saw Farooq sitting alone and when she enquired about Neha, he said the baby was asleep. Reshma found that Neha was bleeding and immediately accused Farooq of abusing the baby, said the police.

“I did not want Reshma to suspect me, so I took the baby to a clinic near the house. Doctors said the baby had difficulty in breathing and was bleeding. They suggested we take her to another hospital. I took Neha to Dr Ambedkar Hospital, where doctors administered first-aid. They told me to take her to Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital, where doctors took scans. After that, I took the baby home and told Reshma that Neha’s health is in a good condition.” On April 6, Neha’s condition deteriorated as she vomited blood. Reshma took her to Bowring Hospital and then to Vani Vilas Hospital on April 7.

Reshma filed a complaint at KG Halli police on April 8 and Farooq was arrested. Reshma and her parents met politicians in Vidhana Soudha. The politicians promised to provide security for Reshma.
