It is turning out to be a hydra-headed problem for the metro authorities and has virtually divided the establishment on the issue of usage of a particular equipment.
After two accidents involving hydra (a lifting machine), the BMRCL is thinking of withdrawing the machinery from the work sites. However, top brass of the technical side is opposed to any such idea.
The mishap took place on Thursday, when the hydra slipped and fell on the compound wall of a residence in Basavangudi. The incident comes after the one that happened at Vijayanagar, early this week. The hydra was the culprit in that mishap as well.
“We will restore the compound wall of the resident as early as possible. It is very unfortunate that these accidents have occurred continuously in a span of four days. We are still investigating whether the cause of the accident is due to hydra or the hydra operator or the problem in the metro site location,” BMRCL officials said.
It is mandated that the BMRCL should prepare a mishap report within 24 hours and should find the cause. “As the two accidents involve hydra machines, we are thinking of avoiding the usage of these machines as they might be one of the causes of the accidents,” officials said.
“All hydra operators are well trained and there is very less chance of the driver misjudging or speeding up of the hydra machine. Once the report comes, we will surely penalise the person who is responsible for the cause of the accident. The contractors will also be fined,” they added.
But, sources say that many top engineers in the metro corporation are opposing the withdrawal of hydra machines as it is very versatile and takes less space . The engineers feel that the cranes take lot of space and many Metro work sites do not have wider space to manoeuvre crane equipment.
“The hydra is a small lifting equipment. The machine is used to lift only small and lighter material. If the driver tries to lift any heavy object, it will topple.
This machine is extensively used everywhere as it is swift and quick, unlike other heavy machinery,” official sources said.
